Wenger under fire

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he is happy to take the blame for the latest injury crisis afflicting his squad, as the fall-out from Alexis Sanchez’s hamstring pull continues.

Wenger admitted Sanchez was jaded in the weeks before he suffered his injury at Norwich last weekend, with the Arsenal boss coming under fire for failing to rest his Chilean international.

Yet Wenger has stressed that Sanchez was adamant that he was ready to play at Norwich, with medical tests carried out by the club's staff confirming he was fit to start at Carrow Road.

"I have spoken to Sanchez since his injury and he is adamant he felt fine," stated Wenger. "If I have to take the blame I do.

"It was not an obvious mistake. We have tests. We have medical tests. We are quite sophisticated in testing our players. I had a chat with Sanchez after the game. We test them every week."

Wenger went on to insist the perception that Arsenal suffer with more injuries than most of their rivals is misplaced:

"We compare our injuries across Europe and I don’t think we have more injuries than anyone else," he added.

“Sanchez had four weeks holiday, he was rested in some games. We had five days between Dinamo and Norwich.

“No one said he could displace his hamstring or back when he was shoved into the cameras. If you want to blame me with the injuries, I have no problem with it.
